همان طور که تجارت کربن عبارت است از خرید و فروش اعتباراتی که به یک شرکت یا نهاد دیگر اجازه می دهد مقدار معینی دی اکسید کربن یا سایر گازهای گلخانه ای منتشر کند. اعتبارات کربن و تجارت کربن توسط دولت ها با هدف کاهش تدریجی انتشار کلی کربن و کاهش سهم آنها در تغییرات آب و هوایی مجاز است.
