The objectives of this lab course are:
1. Developing an understanding on the fundamentals of rock mechanics concepts introduced during rock mechanics course.
2. Improving practical experience in performing laboratory tests including sample preparation, measurement of experimental parameters, analysing and evaluating the results and presenting the findings.
3. Improving writing and communication skills through preparing the reports.
The lab Includes the following experiments,
- Safety instructions and sample prepration
- Durability & Physical properties
- Schmidt hammer (SH)
- Acoustic velocity (AV)
- Pointload (PL)
- Brazilian (indirect tensile strength)
- Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS)
- Triaxial Compressive Strength (TCS)
- Hydraulic Conductivity (K)
- Joint Shear Strength
The students conduct their own experiments and prepare the reports working in groups of four or less. The groups and time-table for the exercises are announced at the beginning of the semester.
